What is Systemic-Functional Linguistics?

The name is actually self-explanatory. Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a theory of language which is focused on the notion of how language is used. Every text – spoken or written – unfolds in some context of use. The use of language then evolves over generations. In other words, the evolution of a language is much determined by the way it is used to satisfy human needs.  SFL starts at social context, and looks at how language both acts upon, and is constrained by, this social context.

Some people confuse the term ‘report’ here with the one like in ‘Progress Report’, or ‘Annual Report’ or the likes. Actually, they are different. ‘Report’ in the Systemic Functional Linguistics tradition is almost similar to description. Again, it is almost similar, but different. Descriptive Text

Descriptive text aims at giving vivid details of how something or someone looks. A descriptive text tells the readers what the thing is, or what the thing does. A description should be so unique that a description of one thing should be different from a description from another thing. In other words, descriptive text is not used to generalize. All different readers should be able to show the same thing being described in the text.
